Solar Energy at the Yoga Ranch
As a part of our continuing mission of peace, we are raising funds to build a 463-panel, 118-kw solar array that will cover 100% of our energy needs. The Yoga Ranch community has been dedicated for decades to living sustainably and providing programs that teach such methods to the public.
The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch practices the yogic principle of social responsibility and integrates ecological sustainability into its operations. As peace begins with compassionate care for all life, Earth Care is at the core of our spiritual practice and part of the experience shared with our guests, staff and students.
The organic gardens and food forest of the ashram augment our food supply and we are committed to recycling and composting our waste. The physical design of the ashram is also being modified and renovated according to Permaculture principles.
By reaching our fundraising goals, we can not only construct a solar array, but also, we can bring the positive example of healthy, sustainable living to our communities, educating and inspiring, in order to be part of the solution in our climate disturbed world.
As climate activist Bill McKibben said in his inspirational message to our 40th Anniversary, Sustainable Community Conference in July, "We need you to work in the real world as quickly and as sharply, as powerfully, beautifully and lovingly as you can, to not only make your place more beautiful and responsible, but also to situate it in a world that's responsible, bringing all your wisdom to bear in that direction ... We've got to stop relying on power from down below, coal and gas and oil, and start relying on power from up above, the sun and wind," and that is what we intend to do.
Environmental Benefits of Solar Energy
By installing a solar array, the Yoga Ranch will contribute to reducing global warming, air pollution and ultimately help to preserve our planet. The array will prevent 90 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from entering the environment each year, which is equivalent to the annual emissions from 19 cars, or 14 homes.
It is also hoping to inspire many other individuals and communities to follow the same path to achieve sustainable development and use the natural resources available to us all.
How to Contribute
Take part in our “108 Sun Salutation Challenge”!
On March 29 at 8:00 a.m. we will perform together 108 sun salutations in order to raise funds to finalize the installation of the solar array, but also to inspire our mind, body ans spirit collectively. To sign-up or sponsor a participant please visit:
Other locations throughout the country (including the Sivananda Center in NYC and in Chicago) will also join the effort. Tax deductible donations can also be made through our Razoo page. Every dollar counts!
The solar array will be installed by RER Energy Group, named one of the top 100 U.S. solar developers by Solar Power World Magazine.
Sunvestment Group, a partner of RER Energy Group, will work with the Yoga Ranch to help finance the project, which will be funded by New York state grants, federal tax deductible donations, community investments, and the purchase of investment tax credits for qualified investors.
Such investment tax credits are available through Sunvestment Group’s Community “Purchase Power Agreement” (PPA) - an investment vehicle through which individuals and private companies can participate in the purchase of a solar array, utilizing the resulting tax credits and accelerated depreciation savings that would otherwise not be available to non-profit entities.
To be part of this exciting new project and find out more about investment opportunities for businesses and individuals, please visit the Sunvestment Group site or contact us directly at email@example.com.
